Judy Mahaffey Pettit has lived in Spartanburg, SC all of her life. She is marrie to Dean Pettit and they have three lovely children. Time and George Pettit and Traci Pettit Hubbard. She has five grandchildren.
Judy started bowling at Pinewood Lanes in the AM Coffee League which is still sanctioned. Thelma Deruchia taught her how to bowl and that is why she bowls like a left hander, even though she is a right hander. She was then invited to bowl in the ladies major league about two years later. She has been bowling in leagues for ladies ever since.
She has been a member of the Spartanburg WBA for over 38 years. She has been on the local association board for over 30 years and served as 2nd Vice President from 1977-1979, 1st Vice President from 1979-1988 and in 1989 began serving as President, the office she is currently holding.
Judy has won many local association tournaments in all the events and has bowled in all the tournaments the association has held. Judy has been bowling in the state tournament since 1964.
She has served on many committees for the SCWBA, ie. Tellers, nominating, credentials, assistant sergeant-at-arms. She had also served as chairperson for these annual meeting committees. She has been a delegate to the state annual meeting from Spartanburg since 1966.
Judy was inducted into the Spartanburg WBA Hall of Fame in 1993 for outstanding service to the association.
Judy has guided the Spartanburg WBA for many years and has been like a rock: always there to promote and guide Spartanburg in the sport of bowling. Judy is fair, honest and does her job whenever asked by the state and local associations. She is always available to help when the SCWBA calls. She can be relied upon to get the job done no matter what is asked of her. Judy will always be a “leader” . Sevice her state and local associations for many years to come in the new millennium.
Spartanburg WBA is very proud of her selection as a member of the SCWBA Hall of Fame for 2000. Judy is very deserving of this great honor. She is joining a great host of ladies of South Carolna who have spent many long hours promoting a sport they all share.
