In 1973, Joe Dickson, a neighborhood friend of George Petty, invited George to join a youth league in Spartanburg, SC. The league was competing at Pinewood Lanes and the coach was SCSYABA Hall of Fame Member Eula Shook. His dedication and determination were soon evident, as he gradually progressed from being a team captain, to league officer, to youth leader.
After moving to adult competition, George remained active in the youth program. He served on the local board as a director from 1976-1983, was president from 1983-1996, and director from 1996-1999. He served on all committees and was assistant city tournament director for a number of years. George has been a certified coach since 1976 and assisted with several learn-to-bowl classes in addition to the weekly assistance he provided to the youth leagues. George was also a site director for the 1983 and 1989 SCSYABA state tournaments and helped with the 1998 tournament. He also provided invaluable support for two state jamborees that were hosted by the Spartanburg YABA.
George and his wife Jane have 2 children: Michael – a student at USC in Columbia and Melissa – mother of their 5-year old granddaughter, Breanna. Currently, he is serving on the nominating committee as part of the USBC transition process to help ensure the future of youth bowling in the Spartanburg area.
