Norwood Cleveland Stone Sr. of 33 Tindal Ave., died Monday, May 28, 2001, following a sudden illness. He was 74.

Born in Greenville, a graduate of Greenville High School Class of 1944, he was a son of the late Enoch Roy and Bertha Thorpe Stone. He retired from E. Roy Stone Co. He was formerly associated with Southern Bleachery and Print Works and also Star Lanes and Dixie Bowl-A-Matic. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenville and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of American Legion James F. Daniel Post No. 3.

Mr. Stone, affectionately known as “Stoney”, was a founding member of the Greater Greenville Bowling Association and served as president of the association from 1957-1959. As an active member of the association for 46 years, he was inducted into the Greater Greenville Bowling Association Hall of Fame. His involvement also included participation in the South Carolina State Bowling Association, where he was also inducted into the State Hall of Fame. He was a life member of both the Greater Greenville Bowling Association and the South Carolina State Bowling Association.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary Rouse Stone; three daughters, Katherine S. Jernigan of Greenville, Judith S. Watson of Easley, and Gwendolyn S. Westmoreland of Taylors; two sons, Norwood C. Stone Jr. and Randall T. Stone, both of Greenville; five grandchildren, Christine S. Jordan, Paige J. Whatley, Miranda Leeman, Jessica Stone, Amy Westmoreland and Adam Westmoreland; two great-grandsons, Joshua Bradley Jordan and Thomas Christopher Whatley; a sister, Anita S. Rourk of Charleston ; and a brother, Joe Stone, of Greenville. He was predeceased by a sister, Martha Gertrude Stone; two brothers, Harold Greer Stone and E. Roy Stone Jr.; and a grandson, Jason Todd Duncan Gillespie.

Visitation will be held from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, followed by the service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Section U.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

The family is at the residence.
