Spurgeon Augustus “Spud” Pettit, 85, of 115 Annie St., Apt. 22, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Riverside Nursing Center.

Born in Oconee County, he was a son of the late John Fuller and Emma Lucy Baldwin Pettit. He was retired from Vulcan Materials, where he worked as personnel manager.

Mr. Pettit served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Liberty.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Ann Stephens Pettit, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Noel E. and Floree Pettit of Powdersville, and James L. Sr. and Kay Pettit of Asheville, N.C.; Karen Pettit, of Liberty; sisters, Bonnie Carter of Edinburg, Texas, Lela Goetz of White Hall, Md., Leah Rankin of Liberty, Myra Winchester of Greenville and Johnnie Niemeyer of Mount Airy, Md.; two brothers, Paul L. Pettit and Coke Pettit, both of Liberty; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Pettit was preceded in death by his son, Wayne A. Pettit; and a brother, Quentin V. Pettit.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 29, 2002, at 3 p.m., at the Liberty Mortuary Chapel, by the Rev. Clark Ford and the Rev. Eddie Pettit. Burial will be at Liberty Mortuary Gardens.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Liberty Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to Liberty First Baptist Church, Building Fund, 400 Edgemont Ave., Liberty, SC 29657.
