Walt R. Payment

This write up is from the application submitted for his induction:  Beginning in 1971, Walt was and active YABA youth worker for 23 years.  On the state level he was 1st Vice President 1976-77; Director 1972-1975 and was very active on the Scholarship and Legislative Committees.  Walt was involved with Jim Hawkins and Gene Tinman in developing the State Scholarship Format and guidelines.  The scholarship is named for these three individuals.

For the Greenville AJBC/YABA he was a board member from 1971-1993 and served on the Scholarship, Audit and Legislative Committees.

He was an ABC Director for 9 years beginning in 1981.

He served the Greater Greenville Bowling Associaiton as a director in 1967; Secretary from 1968 for 32 years; Life Member in 1977 and Elected to the GGBA Hall of Fame in 1974.

He served the SC State Bowling Association as a director – appointed 1969 – Elected 1970.  President 1976-1977; Life Member 1977 and Hall of Fame 1981.

Southeastern Bowling Conference/Southeast Bowling Association – Director elected 1970 for 19 years; Vice President for 7 years, Hall of Fame 1987 and Life Member 1989.

He was a certified coach/instructor.  He helped organize, format and start the local scholarships program in 1971-1972 and the award was first given in 1973.  Served as Secretary of the scholarship Board of Trustees 1972-1982 and member of the selection committee 1983-1987.

Walter Richard Payment

Walter Richard Payment, 72, of 107 Bexhill Court, died on Thursday, July 13, 2006.

Born in De Tour Village, Mich., he was a son of the late Fredrick and Edna Lee Payment and husband of the late Barbara Zillmann Payment.

Mr. Payment served in the U.S. Army and retired from W.R. Grace Company.

He served as Secretary of the Greater Greenville Bowling Association for thirty-four years, was a Life Member and Hall of Fame Member. He also served as President of the SC State Bowling Association and was a member of the American Bowling Congress and Southeastern Bowling Association.

Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Hall and husband Joseph, of Easley; a son, Michael Payment of Greenville; a sister, JoAnn Trudo of De Tour Village, Mich.; a brother, Fredrick Payment of De Tour Village, Mich.; and two grandsons, Jacob Payment and Jordan Hall, both of Easley.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. A private graveside service will follow the visitation.
