Shirley Wessinger

The following is from the SCWBA newsletter – Congratulations to Mrs. Shirley Wessinger of the Columbia WBA who was elected into the SCWBA Hall of Fame by the members of the SCWBA Hall of Fame Board of Directors in February.   Shirley is serving as the third vice president on the SC Women’s Bowling Association Board of Directors and as the Secretary of the Columbia WBA.

 

Shirley was elected in the Bowling Achievement Category.  Shirley has been a member of the Columbia WBA since 1953 and has bowled in every CWBA tournament since becoming a member.  Shirley’s career high average is 174; high career game of 265 and series of 640.  Shirley has also participated in several national tournaments.  She was a member of the Columbia All Star Team in 1980-1981 with a 174.21 average and a member of the All Star Team in 1981-82 with a 172.02 average.  She is a life member of the CWBA.

Cayce – A funeral service for Shirley Braswell Wessinger, 81, will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, February 28, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 pm prior to the service at the chapel.

Shirley passed away Thursday February 25, 2016.  Born in Dodge County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Alvis H. Braswell and Nettie M. Braswell.  She was employed by Fidelity Insurance Company, USC Printing, and S.C. Surplus Property.  Shirley was an avid bowler and three times vice president of the S.C. Women’s Bowling Association Board of Directors.  She was also secretary of the Greater Columbia Bowling Association for many years and was inducted in the S.C. Bowling Hall of Fame in 1988.  Shirley was a member of First Baptist Church in West Columbia.  \

Surviving are her son Terry M. Wessinger (Barbara); and grandsons, Myles A. Wessinger, Trenton G. wessinger and Sterlyn M. Wessinger, all of Cayce.
