Vera Harris

The following information is from the Hall of Fame application:  Vera is a member of the Anderson WBA and is a Life Member.  In the SCWBA:  She has served as SCWBA Secretary for 4 1/2 years, 1st Vice President 2 years, 3rd Vice President 1 year, 4th Vice President 5 years and Director for 3 years.  She has served on all the committees except nominating and has served as Chairman on all.  She was the Pin Action Editor for 2 years and Liaison to Credentials for 2 years.  In the Anderson WBA she has served as 2nd Vice President 2 years, Secretary 8 years, Treasurer 3 years, and Director 4 years.  She has served and been chairman on most of the Anderson committee.  She attended WIBC State Leaders Workshop 2 years and WIBC Leadership Seminars 5 years.

 

The following was submitted with her nomination:  Vera’s personality speaks for itself.  She has a way to get through to people without being bias or pushing herself on anyone.  Vera has courage and loyalty, understanding, initiative and ability to lead and perform her duties with unswerving integrity and determination.  She is a very honest and open person and is very dedicated to her office, home life and at her work place.  She has gone beyond her duties to make sure everything is in order and her dedication has proved this over and over.  Vera has a high game of 274, high series of 580? and high average of 161.

 

Bowling Bio provided by Vera Harris – Vera participated in her first SCWBA State Tournament in 1969 in Sumter, SC.  Since that time, she was booked on bowling and went to her first national tournament in Atlanta, Georgia.  She has worked with the administrative side of bowling and her average has never gotten above the 160’s.

 

At time of induction, she has been a member of the Anderson WBA for 21 years, and has served the association as Secretary, Treasurer, 2nd Vice President and Director.  She has served on all local committees as chairman and member.  She created and organized the first “Miss Anderson WBA” fundraiser which went on to be a great fundraiser for the association for many years.

 

Vera is currently serving as Secretary of the SCWBA and also served as 1st Vice President, 4th Vice President and Director.

 

Vera has held all offices in her bowling leagues, having organized several of the leagues and undertook to coach the bantam bowlers for four years.  She also served as a director on the Anderson Junior Board.

 

The knowledge she has received by attending WIBC workshops and seminars has been put to good use while serving as SCWBA Secretary.

 

Supporting her in all of her bowling activities and travels has been her husband Dick.

 

Vera has a way to get  through to people without being biased.  She has the courage, loyalty, understanding, initiative, and ability to lead and perform her duties with unswerving integrity and determination.

 

Vera is a very honest and open person and very dedicated to her office, home and work place.  She is employed as office manager for a mechanical machine shop.

 

Vera goes beyond her duties to make sure everything is in order and her dedication has proven this over and over.

 

Her willingness to serve as an officer and the manner in which she has done so, makes her worthy of joining the other outstanding members of the SCWBA Hall of Fame.

 

Since her induction, she continued to serve as State Secretary until the merger with the three state associations.  During her membership in the SCWBA for 44 years she served as Secretary for 22 of those years, Vice President for nine years and a Director for four years.  She was the tournament director of the championship, senior and classic tournaments.  She attended many national conventions and served as local and state delegate to many.  She loved attending the state jamborees and most of all the many friendships she made throughout the state.

 

Vera was hired to serve the S.C. USBC Association as the Association Manager but had to resign after six months for medical reasons.  She was appointed to serve on the SCUSBC Board as a director and did so until her term as completed in 2008, at that time she chose not to seek re-election.

Died January 28, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia.  A memorial service was held April 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at Centerville Baptist Church, 1705 Gerrard Road, Anderson, SC.
